Money in Istanbul
The lira, where to change money, and where cards work.
The local currency is the Turkish lira (TL, or TRY). Prices move quickly here, so treat any figure below as a guide rather than a quote.
Changing money
We recommend avoiding exchanging large amounts of money at the airport, as the rates there are generally less favourable. If you need cash on arrival, change only a small amount and exchange the rest at one of the many exchange offices in the city centre, where rates are usually better.
Never change money with somebody who approaches you in the street, and bring clean, unmarked notes.
Cards or cash
Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in Istanbul, including at most restaurants, cafés, shops and tourist attractions. It is still useful to carry some lira for small purchases, street food, public toilets, local markets and taxis.
Euros and US dollars are also accepted by many merchants in tourist areas such as the Grand Bazaar and the Spice Bazaar, but the rate an individual merchant offers may be less favourable than at an official exchange office.
What things cost
As a general idea, a coffee costs around 150 TL, depending on where you drink it. A taxi between Istanbul Airport and the city centre is approximately 2,500 TL, depending on the traffic and where you are going. Many taxis prefer or require cash, so it is worth having enough lira with you.
Tipping
Tipping is part of the culture in Türkiye, although it is not mandatory. If you are happy with the service in a restaurant, around 10 to 15 per cent is appreciated. Check the bill first, as some restaurants, particularly in tourist areas, may already include a service charge.
For your guide, around 10 to 15 euros or US dollars per person is a commonly recommended amount if you are happy with the day. Tips can be given in lira, euros or dollars, and are always appreciated.
At the cash machine
Cash machines are widely available across Istanbul. When you withdraw money or pay by card and you are offered the choice of paying in your home currency or in Turkish lira, choosing lira will usually avoid an unfavourable conversion rate applied by the machine or the card terminal.
