Three and a half hours, all of it inside the palace, which is far bigger than it looks from the gate. You cross four courtyards on old stone and cobble, with a gradual rise through the grounds, and there are steps into most of the pavilions and through the Harem rooms. Because the tour is private we set the pace and can build in sitting stops. Tell us in advance if anyone is unsteady on steps.

About this tour
Topkapı was never one building. It is a walled town of four courts, with a treasury, a barracks, kitchens and the Harem, where the sultan’s family lived and where a good deal of imperial politics was settled. The Ottoman court ran an empire from here for some four hundred years.
This is a private tour with a licensed local guide, for your group only. Tickets to the palace and the Harem are held in advance so you walk past the queue, and the route is yours. If you want an hour in the treasury and ten minutes in the kitchens, that is what happens. Your guide tells the palace as a story: the wars and the treaties, the fights over the throne, where the concubines were brought from and how they were treated, what the eunuchs actually did, and what the mother queen could do that a vizier could not.
It runs about three and a half hours and finishes at the palace exit, so you can stay on in the courts and the gardens afterwards.

The Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III (III. Ahmet Çeşmesi)
Please meet your guide at the Fountain of Sultan Ahmed III, III. Ahmet Çeşmesi in Turkish, in the square in front of the Imperial Gate of Topkapı Palace. Before the tour, your guide will send you their photo via WhatsApp using the number provided in your booking. If you do not already use WhatsApp, please download it before the tour.
Take the tram to Sultanahmet. Walk down past the small mosque, keep to the right side of the tram line and go through the police checkpoint. Keep Hagia Sophia on your left and walk round behind it. Cankurtaran, 34122 Fatih.
You come to the arched Imperial Gate, the entrance to Topkapı Palace. The fountain stands just before it, on the right: the marble pavilion with the wide overhanging roof. Wait in front of it and your guide will come to you.
By taxi, ask for Topkapı Sarayı, the palace, not the Topkapı district, which is in a different part of the city. The road to the gate is closed to traffic, so the taxi stops nearby and it is a few minutes on foot.

Changing or cancelling
Cancel free of charge up to 24 hours before the start time and you are refunded in full. Inside 24 hours we cannot refund. Tell us as early as you can and we will move your date rather than lose you.
If the weather turns
Tours run in rain and in heat. If conditions make a tour unsafe we cancel it ourselves and refund you in full, or move you to another date, whichever you prefer.
